3-D PRINTING

 

NOTES: Due to equipment constraints, this club will be limited to 14 students.

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Kids will learn to combine shapes in the computer to design their own toys. Once developed, we'll print them with a 3D Printer capable of converting a digital file into a tangible object that they will take home for hours of play! 

This club is good for  2nd - 5th graders with an interest in computer programming. 

Instructor  Jairo Moreira and his staff at Imagination Guru bring tech-based enrichment programs to public schools and beyond. Imagination Guru gives a portion of their profits to the Chetna Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing underprivileged girls with an education, allowing them to move forward in their futures.

Art Stars with Ms. Giovanna

Grades K-3

Description Ms. Giovanna has a new line-up of 2D and 3D projects for all budding artists. Students will draw inspiration from different artists and styles to create works of various sizes and forms using a variety of materials. Repeat students are welcome.

This club is good for Everyone! Especially kids who want more art in their lives.

Instructor You all know lovely Ms. Giovanna as one of our After School assistant teachers, but did you know she recently earned her BA (with honors!) in Elementary Education and Art? When she's not keeping us ship-shape at the After School, she volunteers with Free Arts NYC and creates her own Frida Kahlo-inspired drawings and paintings.

Advanced Band Music Theory

Grades  3-5

Description Studies show that learning to play a musical instrument improves children’s cognitive ability and academic performance. Our patient and generous instructors (each of whom is also a talented professional musician) will teach your child the basics of a woodwind or brass instrument of choice, as well as basic ensemble skills and music reading. This comprehensive music programs includes one day of small-group sectional rehearsal, one day of full ensemble rehearsal, plus a music theory class! Students will have performance opportunities and can audition to join the advanced band as they progress. (Private lessons will also be available for an additional fee.)

Ballet

Grades  K – 2nd

Description  Students will learn creative self-expression and individual artistry through a combination of ballet techniques, musical concepts, and creative movement. The first few classes will include a review of concepts introduced in the Fall then build on the academic components of ballet (such as an understanding of the joints and muscles, French terminology used in Classical Ballet, and ballet history). Each class will include stretches to warm up the body, a series of traditional exercises, a series of movements travelling across the floor, and end with a creative movement activity, in which students will use the knowledge they have acquired to engage in the guided process of building a dance. 

This club is good for   New and returning Kindergarten through 2nd graders who love to dance.

Instructor
Christine Jordan grew up dancing. She is currently a professional performing artist in NYC with the Umbrella Collective, TogetherWorks Dansgroep, and Awaken Dance Theater. She began teaching dance to young students when she was 15 and has continued to pass along her knowledge and experiences ever since in various studios in Virginia, Florida, and now New York.

Baseball & Softball

Grades  2-5

Description  Hey batter, batter! Keep those spring and summer baseball & softball skills alive with our Kids in the Game ball club. Kids will work on fundamental techniques (throwing, catching, hitting, base running, and rules of the games) in a supportive, fun environment that values teamwork and being a good sport above all. This club will meet in the schoolyard (or cafeteria in case of bad weather.) Participants with all levels of experience are welcome. 

This club is good for  2nd - 5th grade girls and boys who want to go outside and play after a day in the classroom; new and returning players are welcome.

Instructor  KING (Kids in the Game) instructors are former and current college-level athletes with classroom management training and experience.

Bit Bots for Brainiacs

Grades  K - 2nd

Description  Ever wanted to make your own Super Rainbow Robo-Cat? How about a Marching Marker Maniac? With Bit Bots, kids can create their own robots that will light up, twist and turn, buzz and blink, and propel themselves across the floor using littleBits (simple, electronic modules that snap together to form larger, more elaborate circuits) plus a variety of recycled materials (cardboard, clay, paper, Legos, etc…) to bring their personal creations to life. Evil scientists need not apply!

This club is good for  K - 2nd grade creative kids with an interest in technology. 

Instructor  Koko Open Source Gallery is a Brooklyn-based organization that brings imaginative programming to children so they can explore the intersection of tech, art, and environment.

Bit Bots & Bytes

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Take the next step with BitBots in our new BitBots & Bytes club. This class is run with the use of found electronics, littleBits, LEDs, motors, power sources (such as the sun), Arduino (an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software) and batteries. Utilizing the electronics alongside recycled materials, children create contraptions, kinetic sculptures and creative objects that can move, make sound and light up! 

This club is good for 2nd - 5th graders with an interest in technology. 

Instructor  Koko Open Source Gallery is a Brooklyn-based organization that brings imaginative programming to children so they can explore the intersection of tech, art, and environment.

Capoeira All Levels

Grades  K - 5th


Description  Calling all Capoeiristas! Mestre Foca and his staff will divide this all-levels class by ability to accommodate both new and returning students. Everyone will study specific techniques and movements of this art form based on their experience and ability. Students will have opportunities to enter the “jogo” in which two Capoeiristas play together simultaneously in a ritualized, non-violent, playful game of movement set to rhythm. 

This club is good for  Everyone interested in Capoeira

Instructor  Mestre Foca is native of Brazil, certified martial arts instructor, founder of Capoeira Brooklyn, and a PS 154 parent. His unique and creative approach to instruction encourages discipline, focus, and respect while immersing children in Brazilian music, language, and culture.

Cartooning

CARTOONING FOR 2nd & 3rd Graders

Grades  2-3

Description  In this club, 2nd and 3rd grade students create their own characters, scenes, stories, and strips with Tom Motley. Students will learn techniques for drawing characters, penciling, inking, and lettering as well as visual storytelling for comics. Artwork from all the students will be compiled into a printed booklet at the end of the session. New and returning students are welcome.

This club is good for  All 2nd & 3rd graders who love to draw and tell stories.

Instructor  Tom Motley is a cartoonist, illustrator, and educator. In addition to cartooning with PS 154 kids for the past few years, Tom teaches at the School for Visual Arts and at Pratt Manhattan. His comic work for kids includes the fantasy anthology, Cartozia Tales.

Ceramics

Grades  K - 5th

Description  Shape, squeeze, pinch and roll! Who doesn’t love to play with clay—one of the earth's most versatile materials? New students will learn hand-building techniques while returning students are introduced to new techniques to form personal creations. Every child will have work kiln -fired and glazed at Clayworks on Columbia and the class will culminate in an exhibition of student work with a reception for the artists!

This club is good for  Everyone! Especially kids who love to make their own creations. Great for kids who need to develop hand strength.

Instructor  Ceramicist Sabina Magnus is a working-artist with a BFA from Parsons School of Design who has been creating functional pottery and porcelain sculpture for the past 20 years. In addition to working with aspiring PS 154 potters, Sabina teaches at Clayworks on Columbia located on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Chess

Grades  K - 5th

Description  Chess Grandmaster Anatoly Karpov says it best: “Chess is everything: art, science, and sport.” Research has shown that playing chess improves memory, concentration, spatial reasoning, logic, reading skills, and creativity, so sign up today! Beginning players will learn the fundamentals of the game with special attention paid to opening principles and checkmating. More experienced players will study the greatest chess games ever played to increase their understanding and sharpen their game. Children practice their skills by playing against one another in a fun, supportive, learning environment. 

This club is good for  Everyone! Seriously, the world would be a better place if everyone played chess.

Come on Out & Play

Grades  K - 2nd

Description  Calling all Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders! After a long day in school come out to play cooperative playground games with Kids in the Game in a supportive, fun environment that values teamwork above all. Kids will experience a wide range of physical activities--a great way for kids to blow off some steam while learning how to play well with others! Class will meet in the school yard (or cafeteria in case of bad weather.)

Flag Football

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Football without the tackling or fancy tag with an oblong ball? Either way you describe it, flag football is fantastic! Kids will run, run, run while learning the fundamentals of passing, calling team plays, and scoring goals in a supportive, fun environment that values teamwork and being a good sport above all. Class will meet either in the school yard or Holy Name Field (or cafeteria in case of bad weather.) Participants with all levels of experience.

Fun Run with Fi Rice

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Fi Rice is back for another round of Fun Run. Finish up homework on Wednesdays then head into Prospect Park for cross-country style relays, sprints, obstacle courses, and races. New and returning students are welcome!

This club is good for  Kids who like to run and want to be outside. 

Instructor  Most of you know Fi Rice as a homework help teacher, but did you know she’s also a former Division 1 college track and field star and the co-founder and coach of the Prospect Park Youth Running Club? Ms. Fi has led PPRYC kids to numerous championships including 50 medals at the USA National Track & Field competition!

Gymstars

Level 1

Grades  K - 5th

Description
If the Final Five of Rio were an inspiration for your kids, sign them up for Gymstars Gymnastics. This fun-filled level 1 gymnastics class will keep new (and returning) students on their toes—on and off the balance beam. Each class is packed with activities to increase the strength and flexibility of your little tumbler. The first few classes will include a review of basics then introduce new material so all students can perfect safe techniques for somersaults (front and back), bears kicks (pre-handstand), monkey jumps (pre-cartwheel), mini-tramp skills and more! 

This club is good for  Kids who like to move and be active; children who like dance, yoga, and creative movement but want to try something new. Returning students who want to perfect their basics skills are welcome, too.

Instructor  Aimee German and her Gymstars instructors are former competitive gymnasts, professional performers, and dedicated childhood educators.

Level 2

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  If the Final Five of Rio inspired your gymnastics lover, join Gymstars for our Level II class. Journalism

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  “All the news that’s fit to print…” at PS 154! Ms. Hammond will lead another round of 2nd – 5th graders through the tenets of good reporting to create our first-ever student-led PS 154 newspaper and blog! Students will learn interviewing skills, hone their non-fiction writing chops, and learn to have a photo-journalist’s eye as they record the goings-on around the After School and beyond in photos and words! New and returning students welcome. 

This club is good for  2nd through 5th grade budding writers and photographers with a need to know the truth! 

Instructor  You probably know Erika Hammond as one of our beloved 1st grade teachers. She’s big on inspiring kids to read and write, as much as they can. Ms. Hammond is a Park Slope native who enjoys biking and traveling in her spare time.

Kick, Catch, & Throw

Grades  K - 2nd

Description  Kindergarten through 2nd graders will have an opportunity to learn fundamentals of a variety of sports including baseball/softball, basketball, soccer, & football! Kids will spend two weeks on each sport throwing, catching, kicking, running and doing basic scrimmages for each sport covered. Class will meet in the school yard or cafeteria depending on the activities for the day and the weather. 

This club is good for  K - 2nd graders who love ball sports!

Lego Robotics 

Level 1

Grades  1st - 5th

Description  This club is perfect for little builders who want to see their creations come to life. Kids will use their imaginations to design and build their own projects then connect to motors and sensors using basic programming software and watch them go! Beginning robotics is an excellent first step toward computer programming literacy and higher-level robotics…but kids won’t notice that because they’ll be too busy having fun. 

This club is good for  Kids who love Legos and computers. 

Instructor  Brent Lagerman is the co-founder of mimoYmima (a web design and branding company based in Windsor Terrace) and a PS 154 parent! He is also the co-creator of WebDesignLabs.org, a curriculum to teach children how to create their own websites.

Advanced

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Future engineers of America unite….and make more robots! Kids with previous Lego Robotics experience will use creativity, logic and problem-solving skills to explore how light, touch, sound, ultrasonic, color and accelerometer sensors can enhance their robotic creations. 

This club is good for  Students who have previously taken Lego Robotics classes (at PS 154 or privately) and are ready for bigger programming challenges. NOTE: Students without previous experience will be admitted to the class at the instructor’s discretion.

Magic the Gathering

NOTES:  This two-hour club meets from 3:00 - 5:00pm.

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Battling guilds, vampires, werewolves, satyrs, and nymphs! Magic: The Gathering is back…on its own day and time. Magic players use multi-step logic, strategy, memory, and long-range planning to win—all high order critical thinking skills. (Shhh, don’t tell them they’ll also be reading, doing math, and learning to win and lose gracefully while they play.) Best of all, no prior experience or cards are required. We have everything kids need, but if your child would like bring his or her own cards they will need to store them with Mr. Gioia during the school day.

This club is good for  Kids who love to play games. Excellent for fostering better one-and-one and small group social interaction skills, too!

Instructor  By day, Rob Gioia is the Theater Arts teacher at PS 154, but after school he morphs into a gaming club master. He holds an MA in Educational Theatre from New York University, and a BFA in Acting from Marymount Manhattan College. More importantly, he’s a competitive Magic: The Gathering player and lover of Shakespeare, video games, and his dog Chip.

Mini Marine Biologists

Grades  1st – 3rd

Description  We are THRILLED to welcome back the New York Aquarium to PS 154! In this weekly class, kids will create a naturalist journal around various themes of ocean conservation and sea life. They will learn about animals such as penguins, sharks, sea otters, & invertebrates and study habitats such as the New York seascape, the Amazon, and coral reefs. Some classes may even include live animals or walking trips to Prospect Park! NOTE: new curriculum will be included so repeat customers are welcome!

This club is good for  1st - 3rd graders who want to know more about what lurks in the deep.

Instructor  New York Aquarium Education Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Kepler will lead children through this exciting 10-week program. Jennifer graduated from Brooklyn College and has worked for the National Audubon Society and the New York City Department of Education.

Ms. Annette's Pillow, Pom Poms, & Bon Bons

NOTES:  This two-hour club meets from 3:00 - 5:00pm.

Grades  3rd - 5th

Description  Adventure will be stitched and wrapped and tasted in Ms. Annette’s newest 2-hour fiber art class (titled in collaboration with our spring Color, Fuzz, and Sound club.) Students will design, embroider, stuff and sew at least one unique pillow. Also, pom poms rule - so we’ll also handmake pom poms from colorful, 100% wool yarn - as embellishments for the four corners of our special cushions of wonder. Students will also be encouraged to make a least one huge - beyond belief, amazing mini-WORLD size pom pom. Bon Bons will be served once in a while. (Please let us know about any dietary restrictions!) 

This club is good for  3rd through 5th grade kids with excellent fine-motor skills and the desire to design and make exquisite creations.

Instructor  For over twenty years, Annette Tacconelli has taught art/intuitive creativity workshops around the world, intensive fiber/fine arts programs in schools, and mentored private students of all ages in her Brooklyn studio. Ms. Annette is the mastermind and creative force behind the public art project “Color, Fuzz, and Sound” which graces the fence in front of our school.

Music Mindfulness

Grades  K - 5th

Description  Calling all cool cats who want a little rest and relaxation at the end of a busy day. Join Mr. Anthony for a mellow mix of music appreciation, drawing, movement, and meditation. Each week, kids will explore a different kind of music through listening, drawing, dancing, and playing small instruments then end with quiet reflection and mindful breathing. Since music and art and infinite, returning students are welcome to join again. 

This club is good for  K - 5th graders who like a little peace and quiet. Excellent for stressed-out state test takers!

Instructor  Anthony Pinciotti is a life-long drummer, professional musician, educator (and former PS 154 parent!) When Anthony is not mentoring students in the PS 154 After School music program and are universities (such as NYU, CUNY, and the New School), he tours and records with numerous world-renown jazz and world music performers.

Ninja Challenge

Grades  1st - 5th

Description  Learn Strength, Agility and Endurance thru fast and safe obstacle courses! Combining gymnastics, martial arts and parkour's freestyle movement our Ninja's overcome fun tests that turn energy into purpose! That purpose is to get fit and have fun! Each class consists of conditioning skills, obstacle courses, and timed parkour challenges.

This club is good for  Stealthy sneakaroos who like bouncing off walls!

Instructor  Aimee German and her Gymstars instructors are former competitive gymnasts, professional performers, and dedicated childhood educators.

Pokemon

NOTES:  This two-hour club meets from 3:00 - 5:00pm.

Prospect Park Pioneers

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Prospect Park naturalist (and PS 154 After School instructor) Talia Steiger is excited to return for our weekly nature study club. Children will join Talia and an assistant to explore the natural world in Prospect Park including trees, native plants, woodland and aquatic wildlife, and more!

This club is good for  2nd - 5th graders who want more nature in their lives.

Instructor  Naturalist Talia Steiger has run children's programming for the Audubon Center, Wave Hill, the Sarah Lawrence Center for the Urban River, and the Science Barge in the beautiful Hudson Valley.

Rock Band with Sectionals

Grades  3rd - 5th

Description  Rock on & rock steady with the PS 154 Rock Band. New and returning students will work on the rudiments of rock through singing, playing guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums plus movin' and groovin'. Students will explore the history of rock by listening to a variety music. They will also dig into songwriting so young musicians will have a chance to write and perform their own music. Like all After School music classes, kids will have performance opportunities. This year, we are adding a rotational 30-minute sectional rehearsal. Each week, a different section of the band will stay from 5:45 - 6:15pm on Fridays to dig deeper into their material in a smaller group setting. The rotation schedule will be determine after Dan has a chance to help kids choose their instruments.

This club is good for  Returning Rock Band students and anyone else who’s ready to rock and has mastered basic skills on their own instrument! (Note: After School will provide a drum kit.) 

Instructor  Dan Vonnegut is professional performing and recording musician who has been teaching music to children and teens for 15 years. He’s a multi-instrumentalist who plays drums, percussion, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele, and he loves learning all kinds of new music.

Sonic SOccer

Sonic Soccer

Grades  K - 3rd

Description  We are thrilled to have Sonic Soccer return to PS 154 for another session. Sonic uses small weighted soccer balls from the Brazilian Futsal style that slow the game down to optimize the time every child has with the ball. More time on the ball means more time to work on motor skills, problem solving, and communication, which benefits kids both on and off the field.

This club is good for  Kids who want to be outside running around after a long day inside. Players of all levels are welcome.

Instructor  Sonic is a NSCAA licensed coach who has been playing soccer for over 25 years (including on a NCAA Division 1 team) and coaching since 2008. He works with children as young as two, collegiate athletes, and everyone in between. Additional coaches join him from the Kids Orbit after school program.

Advanced SONIC SOCCER
 

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Advanced Soccer is perfect for kids with lots of on-field experience who want more scrimmage time in addition to additional time to work on motor skills, problem solving, and communication, which benefits kids both on and off the field.

This club is good for  2nd - 5th graders who have a solid base knowledge of soccer fundamentals.

Instructor  Sonic is a NSCAA licensed coach who has been playing soccer for over 25 years (including on a NCAA Division 1 team) and coaching since 2008. He works with children as young as two, collegiate athletes, and everyone in between. Additional coaches join him from the Kids Orbit after school program.

STORYTELLING

Grades  K – 2nd

Description  Storytelling has been called an essential human activity and nobody is better at it than children. Plus, creating narrative is a vital part of developing literacy skills. Using basic theater games, song, movement, existing texts, and new ones will lead kids to discover the essence of their own stories. Kids will utilize their voices and bodies to bring their imaginings to life in a collaborative setting. The end of the session will culminate in a performance.

This club is good for  Great for kids with big imaginations and excellent for reluctant readers who need a nudge toward building pre-literacy skills.

Instructor  Our own lovely Ms. Hannah Barnard will lead the storytellers this fall. Hannah received her BFA in dance from the Florida State University. In addition to teaching music theory and piano for the PS 154 After School, she is a member of the NYC collaborative performance troupe Artists by Any Other Name.

Street Hockey

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  Join PS 154 parent and street hockey aficionado Jason Roth for a rollicking good time! We have all the equipment to teach kids the basics of this non-contact school yard version of the game, including how to handle the stick, moving the puck, offensive and defensive strategies. Class will meet in the school yard (or in the cafeteria if the weather is bad.) As players gain skill, they will be divided into teams and scrimmage. As with all of our sports clubs, learning to work as a team is the true goal. 

This club is good for  2nd - 5th graders who like hockey!

Instructor  Photographer by day, street hockey player at heart, PS 154 parent Jason Roth is excited to bring his favorite sport to our kids. .

Tech for Tykes

Grades  1st – 3rd

Description  Students will start with 3 weeks of Bee-Bots-- cute, colorful, easy-to-operate little robots that teach pre-programming skills such as sequencing, estimation, and problem-solving Then move on to 7 weeks of MaKey Makey-- small, safe circuit boards that allow kids to turn physical objects (think fruits, veggies, candy, clay, coins, Lego, stuffed animals, etc…) into buttons on a laptop. Banana piano, anyone? Giggling stuffed animals? Finger drums? 

This club is good for  1st through 3rd grade future inventors and creative kids with an interest in technology.

Instructor  Jairo Moreira and his staff at Imagination Guru bring tech-based enrichment programs to public schools and beyond. Imagination Guru gives a portion of their profits to the Chetna Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing underprivileged girls with an education, allowing them to move forward in their futures.

Tennis for Everyone

Grades
Beginning Players 3:00 - 3:45pm
Returning Players 4:00 - 4:45pm

Description  New Kids Tennis uses a USTA-sanctioned format to help children learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them a few things have changed -- the court size, the racquet sizes, the tennis balls, the scoring system and the height of the net. This means that more children will have the opportunity to experience the game, have fun playing with their friends and develop the skills that will become the foundation of their game.

This club is good for  New and experienced children who would like to work on the fundamentals of tennis in a supportive, fun environment.

Instructor  New Kids Tennis is a team of professional coaches dedicated to the long-term growth of the sport.

Web Design Labs

Level 1

Grades  3rd - 5th

Description  Over 10 weeks, kids will learn learn the basic principals of web design through hands-on work. Your child will learn digital painting, and photo-retouching (using pixlr.com), and the basics of HTML and CSS (using codepen.io). The goal of the class is to get kids excited about telling a story online by showing them what is possible. The programs used are free and can be used by them outside of the class.

This club is good for  3rd - 5th grade kids who are interested in drawing, video, visual arts, design, and coding. Younger children with previous experience will be allowed to join this club at the discretion of the instructor.

Instructor  Brent Lagerman is the co-founder of mimoYmima (a web design and branding company based in Windsor Terrace) and a PS 154 parent! He is also the co-creator of WebDesignLabs.org, a curriculum to teach children how to create their own websites. Learn more at webdesignlabs.org

Windsor Wordsmiths

Grades  2nd - 5th

Description  If you have a way with words and love to write, join best-selling children's book author for our PS 154 writers group! Kids will work in small groups and one-on-one with Lauren as they explore genres of their choice, including short stories, plays, poems, personal essays, and creative nonfiction pieces. At the end of the session, the club will publish an issue of the Windsor Wordsmiths literary magazine! This club is good for 2nd - 5th grade kids who love to express themselves through writing!

This club is good for  2nd through 5th grade budding writers and photographers with a need to know the truth! 

Instructor  Lauren Thompson is the author of best-selling children's books such as "Mouses First Halloween" and the Little Quack series. She is a former PS 154 parent and our most sought-after private tutor.

Yoga: Inversions, Arm Balances, & Om

Grades  2nd - 5th grade

Description  Did you practice yoga at Afterschool last year? If so, join us this year for an intermediate yoga class as we build strength and focus, working on inversions like handstands, forearm stands and arm balances like crow, side crow and firefly! This class will be packed with lots of movement and mindfulness as we conquer new poses and build inner strength and endurance. Come ready to get strong and focused while having fun!

This club is good for  2nd - 5th graders who want to explore new poses!

Instructor  Shenaaz Jetha is the founder and director of Little Feet Wise Heart yoga, specializing in kids and family yoga. Little Feet has developed unique classes for children and grandparents or family elders to enjoy together, in addition to their unique Little Feet Story yoga classes, Boys Do yoga and fun, outdoor classes in the summers!

Yoga Superheroes

Grades  K - 2nd grade

Description  Superheroes are for KIDS and so is yoga! This class encourages focus, inner strength and inquisitiveness as kids learn the fundamentals of yoga and discover that a superheroes’ strength comes from within. A unique mix of games, books, breath work and mindfulness, students will practice the art of flying on the mat, going upside down and even sideways to build strength and inner focus, then ease into savasana, rest time and OM. Most importantly, students learn essential skills in learning how to calm the mind and harness their energy to find stillness within. 

This club is good for  K - 2nd graders who love to move!
