Description  Jairo Moriera will lead children through the process of turning their ideas into objects. On individual laptops, each child will learn how to combine shapes on screen as they puzzle through designing their own creations. Once developed, these objects will be converted from a digital file into an object printed on a 3D Printer and sent home for hours of fun. Repeat students welcome!

Instructor  Jairo Moreira is the PS 154 chess instructor and the founder of Imagination Guru, a tech-based enrichment program.

Description Through art and simple crafts projects, children will explore the visual world and illustrations they encounter every day. Projects will include Charley Harpers Birds, Collaging with Ezra Jack Keats, and Tom Fruin's Water Tower.

Instructor PS 154 parent Shannon Whitt is a freelance set decorator, prop designer, and illustrator who has worked in theater, television, and print. She is the illustrator of the children’s picture book The Bite Sized Bard: Shakespeare’s Seasons, a collaboration with author Miriam Weiner; and the author of Crafty Pants, Clever Costumes, a children’s costume kit series.

Ballet

Description Each ballet class includes stretches, traditional exercises, and creative movement. The spring session begins with a review of concepts then moves forward to deepen the children's understanding of their bodies, ballet terminology and history. By the end of the class, students will use their skills and knowledge to build and perform a dance. New and returning students welcome.

Instructor Christine Jordan grew up dancing. She is currently a professional performing artist in NYC with the Umbrella Collective, TogetherWorks Dansgroep, and Awaken Dance Theater. She began teaching dance to young students when she was 15 and has continued to pass along her knowledge and experiences ever since in various studios in Virginia, Florida, and now New York.

Description  Bit Bots is for builders who want to see their creations light up, twist and turn, buzz and blink, and propel themselves across the floor. Children use littleBits (simple, electronic modules that snap together to form larger, more elaborate circuits) plus a variety of recycled materials (cardboard, clay, paper, Legos, etc…) to bring their ideas to life. Since projects are self-directed, returning students are welcome!

Instructor  Koko Open Source Gallery is a Brooklyn-based organization that brings imaginative programming to children so they can explore the intersection of tech, art, and environment.

Bit Bots & Bytes

Description  Take the next step with BitBots in our BitBots & Bytes club. This class is run with the use of found electronics, littleBits, LEDs, motors, power sources (such as the sun), Arduino (an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software) and batteries. Utilizing the electronics alongside recycled materials, children create contraptions, kinetic sculptures and creative objects that can move, make sound and light up! Since kids decide what to make each week, the variarations are endless and repeat students are welcome!

Camp Half-blood: adventures in mythology

Description Explore Mythology with Annabeth & Percy from Camp HalfBood, Carter from the Kane Chronicles, and Magnus from The Gods of Asgard. This club will brings these popular books to life through physical engagement, critical thinking and arts and crafts. Kids will design and build their own artifacts, re-enact stories, read, and write. Please note, Adventures In Mythology is not responsible for an obsession with runes & ancient languages, deep interest in ancient Greek or Egyptian trivia, armor building, or an increased fascination with reading and adventure.

Instructor  Plato Learning brings books to life using a curriculum that blends reading with physical engagement, critical-thinking and arts and crafts to develop reading skill and interest. Their services are delivered via summer camp (such as Camp Half Blood and the Double-Daring Camp for Girls ) where they have served over 3000 families since their founding in 2010. Their mission is to create equitable learning spaces where children can unlock their passion and creativity.

Capoeira

Description  Calling all Kindergarten through 3rd grade Capoeiristas! Mestre Foca welcomes new and returning students to study the techniques and movements of this art form. Students will have opportunities to enter the “jogo” in which two Capoeiristas play together simultaneously in a ritualized, non-violent, playful game of movement set to rhythm. 

Instructor  Mestre Foca is native of Brazil, certified martial arts instructor, founder of Capoeira Brooklyn, and a PS 154 parent. His unique and creative approach to instruction encourages discipline, focus, and respect while immersing children in Brazilian music, language, and culture.

Description  In this club, students create their own characters, scenes, stories, and strips with Tom Motley. Students will learn techniques for drawing characters, penciling, inking, and lettering as well as visual storytelling for comics. Artwork from all the students will be compiled into a printed booklet at the end of the session. This session, 4th & 5th graders meet on Tuesdays; 2nd & 3rd graders meet on Fridays. New and returning students are welcome.

Instructor  Tom Motley is a cartoonist, illustrator, and educator. In addition to cartooning with PS 154 kids for the past few years, Tom teaches at the School for Visual Arts and at Pratt Manhattan. His comic work for kids includes the fantasy anthology, Cartozia Tales.

Ceramics

Description  Shape, squeeze, pinch and roll! Who doesn’t love to play with clay—one of the earth's most versatile materials? New students will learn hand-building techniques while returning students are introduced to new techniques to form personal creations. Every child will have work kiln-fired and glazed at Clayworks on Columbia and the class will culminate in an exhibition of student work with a reception for the artists!

Instructor  Ceramicist Sabina Magnus is a working-artist with a BFA from Parsons School of Design who has been creating functional pottery and porcelain sculpture for the past 20 years. In addition to working with aspiring PS 154 potters, Sabina teaches at Clayworks on Columbia located on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Description  Chess Grandmaster Anatoly Karpov says it best: “Chess is everything: art, science, and sport.” Research has shown that playing chess improves memory, concentration, spatial reasoning, logic, reading skills, and creativity, so sign up today! Beginning players will learn the fundamentals of the game with special attention paid to opening principles and checkmating. More experienced players will study the greatest chess games ever played to increase their understanding and sharpen their game. Children practice their skills by playing against one another in a fun, supportive, learning environment.

Digital Photography

Grades 3 - 5

Description  In this BYOC (bring your own camera) club, children will be formally introduced to the digital camera and all its wonders! Kids will learn how to shoot (photograph) table-top (still life with toys, or objects of their choosing), portraits and we will even get to explore outside and photograph our urban landscape. Lighting and the “rule of thirds” will be covered, as well as, editing with Fotor Photo Editor, where kids can get funky and really express their inner artist! We will also be taking a look at photography using smartphones, going beyond Snapchat and Instagram, to learn all the cool things our phones can do too! Required: A digital camera and/or smartphone. (For children who wish to take this club but do not have access to a camera, please email Heather Swain hswain.ps154@gmail.com before registering.)


Instructor  Ps 154 parent Kristen Markoplis is a professional photographer and author of the photobook "Water Towers New York City Style". When not taking pictures, she loves to teach digital photography to children.

Flag Football YMCA

Description  Football without the tackling or fancy tag with an oblong ball? Either way you describe it, flag football is fantastic! Kids will run, run, run while learning the fundamentals of passing, calling team plays, and scoring goals in a supportive, fun environment that values teamwork and being a good sport above all. This class will meet in the outdoors, in the school yard, even when it's cold or drizzly, so please dress kids appropriately. Participants with all levels of experience are welcome.

Description  There’s nothing better than a good run in nature after a long day at school. Finish up that homework then head to Prospect Park with Mrs. Rice for cross-country style relays, sprints, obstacle courses, and races. Running is part of nearly every other sport, plus it’s a complete workout, so strap on your sneakers because tramps like us, baby we were born to…oh wait, no, that’s something else entirely.

Instructor  Fi Rice is also a former Division 1 college track and field star and the co-founder and coach of the Prospect Park Youth Running Club. Sheha s led PPRYC kids to numerous championships including 50 medals at the USA National Track & Field competition!

Description The PS 154 Instrumental Band program is one of the best around. Beginning in 3rd grade, students may choose a brass or woodwind instrument. They are divided into beginning and advanced groups and receive three lessons per week: a small-group sectional rehearsal, a full ensemble rehearsal, plus a music theory class. Students will have performance opportunities and can audition to join the advanced band as they progress. (Private lessons will also be available for an additional fee.)

Description  “All the news that’s fit to print…” at PS 154! Ms. Hammond will lead another round of 2nd – 5th graders through the tenets of good reporting to create our student-led PS 154 newspaper! Students will learn interviewing skills, hone their non-fiction writing chops, and learn to have a photo-journalist’s eye as they record the goings-on around the After School and beyond in photos and words! New and returning students welcome. 

Instructor  You probably know Erika Hammond as one of our beloved 1st grade teachers. She’s big on inspiring kids to read and write, as much as they can. Ms. Hammond is a Park Slope native who enjoys biking and traveling in her spare time.

Description What a great way to end a long day inside! Kindergarten through 2nd graders will have an opportunity to practice the fundamentals of a variety of sports including baseball/softball, basketball, & soccer with Mr. Sean! Kids will spend two weeks on each sport throwing, catching, kicking, running and doing basic scrimmages for each sport covered.  

Instructor  Our very own Sean Holder, aka Mr. Greatness, came to PS 154 as a Kids in the Game instructor. In addition to his many talents as a DJ, he runs the recess program at PS 154 and is the Director of Operations for the After School.

MineCraft moDding

Description  Code in After School; play at home!  In this class gaming, art, and engineering collide as each child, on an individual laptop, is guided through a step-by-step process of coding in Java to create their own MineCraft mods that they can play at home. This is a great way to introduce gamers to the behind-the-scenes world of coding. Kids will build and test bridges, castles and other structures during the club. Then, at home, they can play MineCraft using the mods they've created in the club.

Mini marine biology

Description  The New York Aquarium is back at PS 154, bringing hands-on science to our budding biologists! In this weekly class, kids will explore the aquatic habitats in Prospect Park by observing and collecting wildlife and plants (using safe and scientifically sound methods). Observations will be recorded in each child's Nature Journal using writing and art as they explore a different component of the habitat each class. Students should dress in weather appropriate gear and closed-toed shoes. Puddle stomping and tramping through mud will be encouraged! NOTE: This is a new curriculum so repeat students are welcome!

Instructor  Jennifer Kepler is the coordinator for the  Community Conservation Connections program at the New York Aquarium, which brings education programs to schools and communities. This is her third time teaching for the PS 154 After School.

Description  Learn strength, agility and endurance through fast and safe obstacle courses! Combining gymnastics, martial arts and parkour's freestyle movement our Ninja's overcome fun tests that turn energy into purpose! That purpose is to get fit and have fun! Each class consists of conditioning skills, obstacle courses, and timed parkour challenges.

Description  Before there was Pokemon Go there was TCG (the card game.) And although, Pokemon may look like innocent fun, but don’t be fooled, kids must use multi-step logic, strategy, memory, and long-range planning to win—all high order critical thinking skills. (Shhh, don’t tell them they’ll also be reading, doing math, and learning to win and lose gracefully while they play.) Best of all, no prior experience or cards are required. We have everything kids need, but if students choose to bring their own cards they will need to store them during the school day.

Instructor  While Mr. Gioia is on paternity leave, our PS 154 Kindergarten assistant instructor Eli DiSabato will keep the Pokemon Party going! Eli has been playing Pokemon since he was in 3rd grade and is looking forward to bringing out his cards again.

Prospect Park pioneers

Description  Take advantage of our WT backyard with two Prospect Park Zoo Conversation Educators. Each week, they will lead your kids through a weekly nature walk in beautiful Prospect Park! Children will create Nature Journals as they watch birds, learn about trees, identify plants, check out woodland and aquatic wildlife, and more! Children should dress appropriately for the outdoors with close-toed shoes and jackets for chilly or rainy days.

Instructor  The conversation educators are trained by the WCS and come to us via Prospect Park Zoo where they work with school groups and other after school programs.

Description Using  Rhythmic gymnastics combines dance and tumbling with scarves, balls, and hoops. What could be more fun? Each class is packed with activities to increase strength, flexibility, and coordination as students incorporate somersaults, cartwheels, leaps, jumps, and mini-tramp skills with the apparatus.

Rock Band

Description  Rock on & rock steady with the PS 154 Rock Band. New and returning students will work on the rudiments of rock through singing, playing guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums plus movin' and groovin'. Students will explore the history of rock by listening to a variety music. They will also dig into songwriting so young musicians will have a chance to write and perform their own music. Like all After School music classes, kids will have performance opportunities. This year, we are adding a rotational 30-minute sectional rehearsal. Each week, a different section of the band will stay from 5:45 - 6:15pm on Fridays to dig deeper into their material in a smaller group setting. The rotation schedule will be determine after Dan has a chance to help kids choose their instruments. NOTE: New and returning students are welcome.

Instructor  Dan Vonnegut is professional performing and recording musician who has been teaching music to children and teens for 15 years. He’s a multi-instrumentalist who plays drums, percussion, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele, and he loves learning all kinds of new music.

Science with talia

Description  Prepare to get messy in our hands-on science club. Students will explore the scientific method through a variety of engaging experiments in which they will ask questions, formulate hypotheses, track data, and draw conclusions, all while having fun.

Instructor Talia Steiger wears many hats at PS154 in our homework help rooms and our Nature Study and Nure Crafts clubs. Before she came to Brooklyn she was an educator for Wave Hill, the Sarah Lawrence Center for the Urban River, and the Science Barge in the beautiful Hudson Valley. She is currently also a Prospect Park Teacher-Naturalist and is excited to bring more science to our kids!

Description  Mr. Jairo will teach 1st - 3rd graders the basics of Scratch, a free-on-line coding program developed by MIT to help young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. self-defense & personal safety

Grades  4 - 5

Description Knowing how to safely navigate on their own is a must for Brooklyn kids gearing up for middle school. Using role playing, group activities, individual exercises, and lots of practice, kids will learn external awareness (are my surroundings safe), internal awareness (what's the little voice inside of me saying), threat assessment (am I in danger), and personal safety (how can I use my voice and body to protect myself.) This is a great class for building confidence and fostering independence in 4th and 5th grade kids as they begin to strike out on their own in our neighborhood and beyond.

Instructor This class is a special program developed specifically for PS 154 4th & 5th graders by PS 154 parent Stewart Carroll  and his staff at Sun Dojo, a family-oriented, martial arts studio in Windsor Terrace which specializes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing, and children's martial arts.

STORYTELLING

Description  Ms. Hannah is back with more Storytelling adventures! Using basic theater games, song, movement, existing texts, and new ones will lead kids to discover the essence of their own stories. Kids will utilize their voices and bodies to bring their imaginings to life in a collaborative setting. Plus, creating narrative is a vital part of developing literacy skills. The end of the session will culminate in a performance.

Instructor  Hannah Barnard received her BFA in dance from the Florida State University. In addition to teaching music theory and piano for the PS 154 After School, she is a member of the NYC collaborative performance troupe Artists by Any Other Name.

Note Tennis now meets on Tuesdays. We will provide all equipment and a 6 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. 

Description  The Armory tennis coaches are back are ready to work with beginning and returning players. The YMCA uses the United States Tennis Association QuickStart program with youth-sized racquets and slower, lower-bouncing balls to make learning the sport easier for children. In addition to learning fundamental techniques of hitting, kids will play games to improve footwork, coordination, and strength.

Level 1 Description  Over 10 weeks, kids new to coding will learn learn the basic principals of web design through hands-on work. Your child will learn digital painting, and photo-retouching (using pixlr.com), and the basics of HTML and CSS (using codepen.io). The goal of the class is to get kids excited about telling a story online by showing them what is possible. The programs are free and can be used outside of the class. New and returning students are welcome.

LEVEL 2 Description  Level 2 will deepen kids' knowledge base  of web design through digital painting, and photo-retouching (using pixlr.com), and delve further into HTML and CSS (using codepen.io). Kids can continue working on a projects they started in the Fall or explore new ideas. The programs are free and can be used outside of the class. New and returning students are welcome.

Yoga: Balance from the inside out


Grades 2 - 5

Day Thursday

Time  3:00 - 4:15pm

Description  Yogis will discover that balance comes from the inside out through a unique mix of asanas, games, books, breath work and mindfulness. Students will work on inversions such as handstands, forearm stands and arm balances like crow, side crow and firefly! Each class will be packed with lots of movement and mindfulness as we conquer new poses and build strength and endurance. Most importantly, students learn the essential skills of how to calm the mind and achieve balance inside and out.

Instructor  Shenaaz Jetha is the founder and director of Little Feet Wise Heart Yoga, specializing in child and family yoga. Little Feet has developed unique classes for children and grandparents or family elders to enjoy together, in addition to their unique Little Feet Story yoga classes, Boys Do yoga and fun, outdoor classes in the summers!

Yoga: Exploring Mindfulness

Description Our youngest after schoolers can end the day on a peaceful note! Children are invited to join Ms. Shenaaz for a short and sweet reprise, incorporating various elements of mindfulness including breathing exercises, artwork, restorative yoga, music, and story time to calm our minds and bodies at the end of a long day. Aaah, now all they need is a warm bath and a full belly for a good night's sleep!
