3-D PRINTING

Description  Jairo Moriera will lead children through the process of turning their ideas into objects. On individual laptops, each child will learn how to combine shapes on screen as they puzzle through designing their own creations. Once developed, these objects will be converted from a digital file into an object printed on a 3D Printer and sent home to play with.

Instructor  Jairo Moreira is the PS 154 chess instructor and the found of Imagination Guru School of Chess and Computers which offers summer camps and tech-based enrichment programming for after schools in New York and New Jersey.

AQUARI-ART Mini marine bio

Description  The New York Aquarium is back at PS 154 this fall, combining hands-on science and art so young budding biologists can explore the New York Seascape. Each week will include a project inspired by a mini-engagement on a specific topic or species native to our marine habitats. Kids will discover amazing specis and learn how they can play a part in their conservation.

NOTE This is a new curriculum so repeat students are welcome!

Instructor  Jennifer Kepler is the coordinator for the  Community Conservation Connections program at the New York Aquarium, which brings education programs to schools and communities.

Description Through art and simple craft projects K -3rd grade budding artists will explore the many forms of art that surround us everyday:  not only the great master works we see in museums, but also the illustrations in their favorite books, the public art in our city and even the designs on our t-shirts. Each week the class will take inspiration from an artist and create their own work using  wide variety of techniques:  painting, collage, printmaking and 3d Sculpture.  Projects will include Picasso’s Funny Faces, Chihuly’s Gorgeous Glass, Eric Carle’s Caterpillar and Playing with Tom Otterness!  

Instructor PS 154 parent Shannon Whitt is a freelance set decorator, prop designer, and illustrator who has worked in theater, television, and print. She is the illustrator of the children’s picture book The Bite Sized Bard: Shakespeare’s Seasons, a collaboration with author Miriam Weiner; and the author of Crafty Pants, Clever Costumes, a children’s costume kit series.

Art of crafting

Description  In this class, kids will explore the ways that art and craft techniques work together.  Children will build fine motor skill and gain crafting confidence through the opportunity to sew, sculpt, decoupage, mosaic and create wearable art.  Projects will include paper bead jewelry, homemade halloween fun, printmaking cards, gift wrap and batik pillows.

Ballet

Description Each ballet class includes stretches, traditional exercises, and creative movement. The fall session begins with an overview of concepts and moves forward to deepen the children's understanding of their bodies, ballet terminology and history. By the end of the class, students will use their skills and knowledge to build and perform a dance. 

Instructor Christine Jordan grew up dancing. She is currently a professional performing artist in NYC with the Umbrella Collective, TogetherWorks Dansgroep, and Awaken Dance Theater. She began teaching dance to young students when she was 15 and has continued to pass along her knowledge and experiences ever since in various studios in Virginia, Florida, and now New York.

BASKETBALL YMCA

Bit Bots for Brainiacs

Description  Bit Bots is for builders who want to see their creations light up, twist and turn, buzz and blink, and propel themselves across the floor. Children use littleBits (simple, electronic modules that snap together to form larger, more elaborate circuits) plus a variety of recycled materials (cardboard, clay, paper, Legos, etc…) to bring their ideas to life. Since projects are self-directed, returning students are welcome!

Instructor  Koko Open Source Gallery is a Brooklyn-based organization that brings imaginative programming to children so they can explore the intersection of tech, art, and environment.

Description  Using screwdrivers, pliers and other tools, kids destroy discarded printers, blenders and other common electronics to get inside and see how they work. Camp Half-blood: adventures in mythology

Grades 3 - 5

Description Explore Mythology with Annabeth & Percy from Camp Half-Blood, Carter from the Kane Chronicles, and Magnus from The Gods of Asgard. This club will brings these popular books to life through physical engagement, critical thinking and arts and crafts. Kids will design and build their own artifacts, re-enact stories, read, and write. Please note, Adventures In Mythology is not responsible for an obsession with runes & ancient languages, deep interest in ancient Greek or Egyptian trivia, armor building, or an increased fascination with reading and adventure. Returning and new students welcome!

Instructor  Plato Learning brings books to life using a curriculum that blends reading with physical engagement, critical-thinking and arts and crafts to develop reading skill and interest. Their services are delivered via summer camp (such as Camp Half-Blood and the Double-Daring Camp for Girls) where they have served over 3000 families since their founding in 2010. Their mission is to create equitable learning spaces where children can unlock their passion and creativity.

Capoeira

Description  Calling all Kindergarten through 3r grade Capoeiristas! Mestre Foca welcomes new and returning students to study the techniques and movements of this art form. Students will have opportunities to enter the “jogo” in which two Capoeiristas play together simultaneously in a ritualized, non-violent, playful game of movement set to rhythm. 

Instructor  Mestre Foca is native of Brazil, certified martial arts instructor, founder of Capoeira Brooklyn, and a PS 154 parent. His unique and creative approach to instruction encourages discipline, focus, and respect while immersing children in Brazilian music, language, and culture.

Description  In this club, students create their own characters, scenes, stories, and strips with Tom Motley. Students will learn techniques for drawing characters, penciling, inking, and lettering as well as visual storytelling for comics. Artwork from all the students will be compiled into a printed booklet at the end of the session. New and returning students welcome!

Instructor  Tom Motley is a cartoonist, illustrator, and educator. In addition to cartooning with PS 154 kids for the past few years, Tom teaches at the School for Visual Arts and at Pratt Manhattan. His comic work for kids includes the fantasy anthology, Cartozia Tales.

Ceramics

Description  Shape, squeeze, pinch and roll! Who doesn’t love to play with clay—one of the earth's most versatile materials? New students will learn hand-building techniques while returning students are introduced to new techniques to form personal creations. Every child will have work kiln-fired and glazed at Clayworks on Columbia and the class will culminate in an exhibition of student work with a reception for the artists!

Instructor  Ceramicist Sabina Magnus is a working-artist with a BFA from Parsons School of Design who has been creating functional pottery and porcelain sculpture for the past 20 years. In addition to working with aspiring PS 154 potters, Sabina teaches at Clayworks on Columbia located on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Chess

Description  Chess Grandmaster Anatoly Karpov says it best: “Chess is everything: art, science, and sport.” Research has shown that playing chess improves memory, concentration, spatial reasoning, logic, reading skills, and creativity, so sign up today! Beginning players will learn the fundamentals of the game with special attention paid to opening principles and checkmating. More experienced players will study the greatest chess games ever played to increase their understanding and sharpen their game. Children practice their skills by playing against one another in a fun, supportive, learning environment. 

Instructor  Jairo Moreira and his staff at Imagination Guru bring chess and tech-based enrichment programs to public schools and beyond. Imagination Guru gives a portion of their profits to the Chetna Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing underprivileged girls with an education, allowing them to move forward in their futures.

Claymation

Description Have a budding film maker or a dedicated 3-D model maker in your house? Clay World helps your child explore the art of clay modeling  and stop-motion techniques in this fun weekly class.  Kids will hand build monsters, fairies, animals, and all sorts of creatures plus the worlds they occupy to create an amazing short animation video.  Check out a portfolio of Clay World work here!

Instructor  Clay World was founded by award-winning Colombian artist and architect Jorge Cruz and his wife Johanna Morales. The couple runs programs in Miami and New York City which focus on developing and improving children’s fine motor skills, artistic capabilities, and creative expressiveness through exploring the art of clay modeling and animation

Digital Photography

Grades 4 - 5

Description  In this BYOC (bring your own camera) club, children will be formally introduced to the digital camera and all its wonders! Kids will learn how to shoot (photograph) table-top (still life with toys, or objects of their choosing), portraits and we will even get to explore outside and photograph our urban landscape. Lighting and the “rule of thirds” will be covered, as well as, editing with Fotor Photo Editor, where kids can get funky and really express their inner artist! We will also be taking a look at photography using smartphones, going beyond Snapchat and Instagram, to learn all the cool things our phones can do too! 

Required: A digital camera and/or smartphone. (For children who wish to take this club but do not have access to a camera, please email Heather Swain hswain.ps154@gmail.com before registering.)


Instructor  Ps 154 parent Kristen Markoplis is a professional photographer and author of the photobook "Water Towers New York City Style". When not taking pictures, she loves to teach digital photography to children.

Flag Football YMCA

Description  Football without the tackling or fancy tag with an oblong ball? Either way you describe it, flag football is fantastic! Kids will run, run, run while learning the fundamentals of passing, calling team plays, and scoring goals in a supportive, fun environment that values teamwork and being a good sport above all. This class will meet in the outdoors, in the school yard most days, so please dress kids appropriately for the weather. Participants with all levels of experience are welcome.

Fun run

Description  There’s nothing better than a good run in nature after a long day at school. Finish up that homework then head to Prospect Park with Mrs. Rice for cross-country style relays, sprints, obstacle courses, and races. Running is part of nearly every other sport, plus it’s a complete workout, so strap on your sneakers because tramps like us, baby we were born to…oh wait, no, that’s something else entirely.

Instructor  Fi Rice is also a former Division 1 college track and field star and the co-founder and coach of the Prospect Park Youth Running Club. Sheha s led PPRYC kids to numerous championships including 50 medals at the USA National Track & Field competition!

Level 1 Description This fun-filled level 1 gymnastics class will keep new (and returning) students on their toes—on and off the balance beam. Each class is packed with activities to increase the strength and flexibility of your little tumbler. The first few classes will include a review of basics then introduce new material so all students can perfect safe techniques for somersaults (front and back), bears kicks (pre-handstand), monkey jumps (pre-cartwheel), mini-tramp skills and more! 

Level 2 Description  Our Level 2 class will continue to increase strength, coordination, and flexibility as kids learn new skills on the mat (like dive rolls, cartwheels, handstands, tripods, and back bends) as well as new moves on the balance beam and mini tramp. 

Instructor  Aimee German and her GymStars instructors are former competitive gymnasts, professional performers, and dedicated childhood educators.

Description The PS 154 Instrumental Band program is one of the best around. Beginning in 3rd grade, students may choose a brass or woodwind instrument. They are divided into beginning and advanced groups and receive three lessons per week: a small-group sectional rehearsal, a full ensemble rehearsal, plus a music theory class. Students will have performance opportunities and can audition to join the advanced band as they progress. (Private lessons will also be available for an additional fee.)

NOTE Band runs weekly for the full  school year (which includes 35 weeks of instruction). Registration is for the entire year. The fee for the full year is $1200 / child, billed in three $400 installments (once for each session--fall, winter, spring) plus a one-time $50 rental fee for any child who uses a PS 154 instrument. Students may drop or add band at any session break and fees will be adjusted accordingly.

Description  “All the news that’s fit to print…” at PS 154! Ms. Hammond will lead another round of 2nd – 5th graders through the tenets of good reporting to create our student-led PS 154 newspaper and blog! Students will learn interviewing skills, hone their non-fiction writing chops, and learn to have a photo-journalist’s eye as they record the goings-on around the After School and beyond in photos and words! New and returning students welcome. 

Instructor  You probably know Erika Hammond as one of our beloved 1st grade teachers. She’s big on inspiring kids to read and write, as much as they can. Ms. Hammond is a Park Slope native who enjoys biking and traveling in her spare time.

Lego stem adventures

Description Let kids tap into their imaginations with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts as they build engineer-designed projects such as Boats, Snowmobiles, Catapults, and Merry-Go-Rounds. They will use special pieces to create their own unique design! Students can explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO® building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor

Instructor Play-Well TEKnologies brings engineering programming to over 100,000 students per year in 23 states. Their mission is to teach through play, encouraging children to explore, solve problems, and express themselves through LEGO.  Play-Well curriculum is designed by engineers and refined by teachers, but the kids just think it's fun!

Magic: the Gathering

Description  Mr. Gioia is back to battle guilds, vampires, werewolves, satyrs, and nymphs! Magic players use multi-step logic, strategy, memory, and long-range planning to win—all high order critical thinking skills. (Shhh, don’t tell them they’ll also be reading, doing math, and learning to win and lose gracefully while they play.) Best of all, no prior experience or cards are required. We have everything kids need, but if your child would like bring his or her own cards they will need to store them with Mr. Gioia during the school day.

Instructor  By day, Rob Gioia is the Theater Arts teacher at PS 154, but after school he morphs into a gaming club master. He holds an MA in Educational Theatre from New York University, and a BFA in Acting from Marymount Manhattan College. More importantly, he’s a competitive Magic: The Gathering player and lover of Shakespeare, and video games.

MineCraft moDding

Description  Code in After School; play at home!  In this class gaming, art, and engineering collide as each child, on an individual laptop, is guided through a step-by-step process of coding in Java to create their own MineCraft mods that they can play at home. This is a great way to introduce gamers to the behind-the-scenes world of coding. Kids will build and test bridges, castles and other structures during the club. Then, at home, they can play MineCraft using the mods they've created in the club.

Pokemon

Rock Band

Description  Rock on & rock steady with the PS 154 Rock Band. New and returning students will work on the rudiments of rock through singing, playing guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums plus movin' and groovin'. Students will explore the history of rock by listening to a variety music. They will also dig into songwriting so young musicians will have a chance to write and perform their own music. Like all After School music classes, kids will have performance opportunities. Each week, a different section of the band will shave an additional 30-minute sectional rehearsal to dig deeper into their material in a smaller group setting. The rotation schedule will be determine after Dan has a chance to help kids choose their instruments.

Instructor  Dan Vonnegut is professional performing and recording musician who has been teaching music to children and teens for 15 years. He’s a multi-instrumentalist who plays drums, percussion, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele, and he loves learning all kinds of new music.

Description   This fall PS 154 Kindergarten and first graders can enjoy  One World Project's Spanish language program during After School!  This play-based program will be a fun and hands-on introduction to Spanish through song, games, art and building projects. 

Instructor  One World Project (OWP) is a nonprofit community-based center located in Windsor Terrace that promotes cultural understanding and environmental sustainability through meaningful multilingual community programs, after school, camp, and early childhood education. Catalina Schliebener, an experienced educator and teaching artist from Chile, will teach this class.

Description  Good old-fashioned Brooklyn street games such as handball, skully, ringoleavio, kings, and boxball are fading away, but PS 154 After School wants to bring them back! Join Brooklyn native & PS 154 father Kurt Bro to learn the outdoor games kids used to play when they were unplugged. Bottlecaps, Spaldeen balls, chalk, and a few friends is all they'll need for hours of fun. And best of all, they'll bring these games home then go outside and play on their own until you call them in for dinner.

Description  Kids will learn learn the basic principals of web design through hands-on work coding their own websites!. The goal of the class is to get kids excited about telling a story online and giving them tools to make something original. The programs are free and can be used outside of the class. New and returning students are welcome.

Instructor  Jairo Moreira is the PS 154 chess instructor and the found of Imagination Guru School of Chess and Computers which offers summer camps and tech-based enrichment programming for after schools in New York and New Jersey.

3rd & 4th Grade Small Group Math Help

Description  If your 3rd or 4th grader would benefit from extra math help in a small group setting , we've got you covered. Kids will meet in groups of 8 - 10 students with Ms. Ussery (3rd grade) or Ms. Ritchie (4th grade) to shore up skills and delve into math work from school that week. Best for kids who need additional assistance with the DOE math curriculum. 


Instructors  Ms. Ussery and Ms. Ritchie are DOE-certified classroom teachers at PS 154.
