Welcome to Kindergarten at PS 154! Kindergarten is a time of exploration and social growth, and provides the foundation to a child's educational development. Each of our three Kindergarten teachers has her own special and unique style that makes our daily schedule of events run smoothly.

Daily Routine

Here's what we do every day:

  • Students start out with a morning gathering together to plan the day ahead and develop classroom routines.

  • Then it's on to the excitement of Shared Reading, Word Study, Read Alouds, and Reading Workshop, where children develop great reading habits and skills learned from the modeling of their teachers

  • We take time out for a healthy snack and social conversation.

  • Next, the students plant a seed for their writing in Writing Workshop. Units of study include: Personal Narratives, Small Moments, How-To Books, Non-Fiction, and Poetry. The children really are amazing when given the opportunity to create, manage, and explore their own thoughts and stories with open-ended questioning and encouragement by their teachers.

  • Lunchtime !!

  • After lunch is a great Read Aloud

  • Next we're off to the exploration of Every Day Mathematics. Children are able to explore and grow with various math games and lessons such as time, patterns, money, adding, subtracting, and shapes. They are able to work hands-on and maneuver math manipulatives to create their own reasoning behind retrieving their answers.

  • Several days a week, we have social studies and science. In social studies, the children explore concepts such as community, friendship, family, and "all about me". During science time, they learn about the five senses, sinking and floating, and explore the physical properties of different objects and materials.

  • The best part of the day is, of course, Choice Time! This is a time when children get to socialize, pretend, make plans, strategize, sing, dance, and "be children." The children can have a choice of blocks, puzzles, dramatic play, computer, art, writing, classroom library, painting, discovery centers, and puppetry. Children work together to form friendship bonds, be creative, and learn through play.

Our kindergarten classrooms are wonderful and pleasant settings. The teachers are trained, nurturing, and basically enjoy the wonder of early childhood development.
