Not only are our events an important part of the PTA’s fundraising activities, PTA events are also about bringing our community together in fun ways to allow everyone associated with P.S. 154 to show their support for our children and their teachers. Your participation helps our children and our community grow!

  • Upcoming programming: monthly parenting talks, book club

AND a parenting talk, "Raising your child's EQ," by Jane Bliss Birk, Leadership Coach and Facilitator SEE Committee Co-chair & 4th grade parent

Emotional intelligence is a hot topic for adults and children alike. Science is showing us that a person’s ability to manage his/her emotions (Emotional Intelligence Quotient - EQ) determines the quality of his life more fundamentally than IQ. Let’s look at what happens to the brain during meltdowns and tantrums (of both the adult and kid variety) and practice tools to calm the storm and raise EQ for more peaceful, productive exchanges with our kids.

NOV 26-30 in the MMR

Textile waste adds significantly to the waste stream — and yet so much of it can be reused or recycled. Join the PTA’s Sustainability Committee in collecting textiles for reuse and recycling. Take the opportunity to recycle unneeded stuff AND help raise money for our kids: The PTA will earn a dime on every pound collected!

What we can accept: clean clothing, shoes, sneakers, hats, linens, towels, handbags, and belts. We cannot accept scraps, rugs, comforters or pillows.

Collection bins are located in MMR.

60 min presentation, 30 min Q&A in the PS 154 Multi Media Room - MMR
Open to PS 154 parents and the wider community

The SEE Committee has organized a workshop for parents to learn about a modern, healthy approach to talking about sex with our children.

Workshop Description

The notion that a single sex talk at home or a few health classes in school are enough to guide kids toward healthy choices and sexual empowerment is, thankfully, fading. But that leaves many parents floundering. Many of us want to encourage conversations with our children about bodies, gender, boundaries, consent, sex and sexuality, but we aren’t sure what to say, how to say it, or when to begin. When is the “right time” to start talking? How young is too young? What, exactly, should we be talking about at various ages?

In this workshop for parents of elementary-aged children, sex educator Rachel Lotus will discuss the importance of the “early and often” approach to conversations about sexuality, explore the powerful connection between our own sex ed histories and the messages we send to our kids, and send parents home with actionable steps, practical help with language, and resources for all ages.

Topics include:

  • Early and often: start talking, keep talking.

  • Social and emotional side of sex education: beyond biology.

  • How and when to talk about difficult, oft avoided topics.

  • Reflections on our own sex ed histories. What are the belief systems we hope to leave behind or pass on to our children?

  • Points of entry: how to start conversations proactively instead of waiting for questions to arise.

  • Additional support for kids: sex ed classes with peers.

  • Resources for kids of all ages and stages.

Used Book Fair

Dec 17-Dec 21

Pre-loved books will be collected and distributed by grade so that all of our children will have access to new (to them) books.  We’re looking for more help organizing this essential event — please email Used Book Fair Chair, Inna Kalin if you’re interested in learning more!

We’re organizing a wonderful (and free) New-To-You Book Fair in December, and will start collecting books at our first PTA meeting.  Please group your donations by your best guess of grade level, and bring them to school on Monday, September 17 at 6:30pm.

With a used book fair, we get all the benefits of the Scholastic one, without the complication of handling money during the school day -- every student gets to participate at the same level.  We decided to test this concept this year after the superintendent implored PTAs to stop running Scholastic-type book fairs at a diversity town hall last spring. For those interested in buying new books while supporting our school, we’re looking into partnering with Terrace Books for a special week or two.  Stay tuned for more information!
