Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Public Hearing
June 6, 6-8:30pm
Prospect Heights Educational Campus, 883 Classon Ave
Several PS 154 parents are meeting up at 154 at 5:15 pm to travel to the hearing together. Questions? Email 154 dad Geoff DeBery at email@example.com.
ESSA is the Obama administration's signature education law that was developed to replace No Child Left Behind. It allows states to craft their own “state plan” detailing education policy reforms and specifying how those reforms tie into federal funding. This is an important opportunity for New York State to enhance Social Emotional Learning (SEL) by incorporating goals that articulate a well-rounded vision of student success and providing professional development to increase educator capacity for SEL.
The New York State Education Department drafted a plan and is holding hearings across the state over the coming weeks to give parents an opportunity to learn more about it and to provide public comments that may shape future revisions. For more information, click here. For more information about SEL and ESSA, click here.
June 14, 7pm, Founders Workspace (Prospect & 10th Ave)
Parent Amy Brill will lead the first meeting, open to the entire 154 community. We’ll have an informal discussion of The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. You can buy it a 10% discount from Terrace Books on PPW - tell them it's for the PS 154 Book Club. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
June 22, 6:30pm, MMR
