PS 154 Celebrates Black History Month!

A note from Ms. Rached

Over the past few weeks, Mr. Buckley, Tanica, and I have had the delight of working with the Black History Month planning committee, a subcommittee of our Equity Team, to plan a cohesive Black History Month experience for our students, spanning bulletin board displays,  Family Mornings, classroom instruction, our school-wide Book of the Month. We are excited to bring this programming to our classroom (and hallways!)! It is our hope that through this programming, our students will learn about some of the contributions of African Americans to our country, as well as to celebrate and continue to build an understanding of one another. A huge and heartfelt thank you to the Black History Month planning committee for your collaboration and support!

Equity Team's Interactive Learning Boards for Black History Month

Our dedicated parents in the Black History Month Planning Sub-committee, part of the Equity Team, have been hard at work crafting engaging bulletin boards. These interactive displays are designed to provide our children with valuable learning opportunities about the remarkable contributions of Black Americans. Be sure to explore these educational exhibits during our upcoming family morning.

Black History Month: Spotlights in Student Learning

This Black History Month, our students dive into an educational journey that illuminates the past and nurtures an appreciation for diverse narratives shaping our history. Across grade levels, they explore significant aspects, fostering a deeper understanding of remarkable individuals, places, and events.

Here is a spotlight with examples of learning in kindergarten & 4th grade:

Our kindergartners will delve into the continent of Africa. They will discover the vibrant and diverse markets that characterize Africa, where a plethora of goods, from traditional crafts to fresh produce and spices, contribute to the colorful tapestry of these markets. Our young learners will unravel the rich history of Timbuktu in Mali. Once a thriving center of learning and trade during medieval times, Timbuktu housed universities and libraries, standing as an intellectual hub in the ancient world.

Our fourth graders will be engaged in understanding the excavation of Fort Mose and the significance of the Southern Underground Railroad. Did you know that Fort Mose in Florida is referred to as the "Freedom Colony"? It holds the distinction of being the first legally sanctioned community of free African Americans in what would later become the United States. Our fourth graders will delve into this historical narrative, creating posters and summaries that capture the essence of this pivotal part of history.

Book of the Month

Our February Book of the Month, “Invincible: The Father and Mothers of Black America” by Wade Husdon connects the many of the places and movements that students are learning about in their classrooms with the larger narrative of Black America.

Black History Month Assembly

We are delighted to be welcoming the Abun-Adance Academy of the Arts to perform assemblies for our students. During these assemblies, students will learn about Black Excellence, as well as the rich history and cultural impact of African dancing, drumming and movement.

Daily Announcements

As we honor Black History Month, students on our Youth Equity Team will deliver morning announcements highlighting Black Americans' impactful contributions. The Youth Equity Team's dedication to positive change is inspiring, and we're thrilled to support them in their journey.
